We are all being silenced. It doesn’t matter your political affiliation, your religious leanings, your ethnic background, or even your geographical location—we are all being silenced. For nearly two years, I've faced the threat of a SLAPP lawsuit, a strategic lawsuit against public participation, that has attempted to mute my voice. This threat hasn't just been aimed at me; it has extended to my family. At one point, my mom was brought into this ordeal, but now, my lawyer says that I can share that the not-for-profit hospital network in our community has silently dropped the threat against her. As for me, I’m waiting for the two-year statute of limitations for them to sue me to come to an end.

I once believed that free speech was fundamental to a free and democratic society, but for nearly two years, I have had to self-censor out of fear of repercussions. Despite this, I've done my best to help change speech laws. You can see my efforts in the movement to end SLAPP lawsuits in Maine on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_Ks5yM73WCE?si=qnSXAGWC95PN286n

If I am coerced into silence, then not only is my voice gone, but also the voices of countless others. As a student, there's a perception that we focus on distant problems or issues unique to our situations, but we are equally concerned about our communities. I believe that when students are free to express their ideas, the whole community benefits from a more abundant dialogue and exchange of ideas.
Even though I am not formally being sued, Congressman Golden cannot get involved because he is prohibited from engaging in legal matters. Who has been involved? The community of supporters took the time to sign my petition and those who went further to leave comments. I feel my voice has been amplified by countless others who refuse to be silenced.

The day hasn't yet arrived when the statute of limitations expires. I’m still threatened by a lawsuit, I’m still reluctant to go on social media, and I still worry about the safety of my family because of my decision to write a petition and a letter to the editor. Nevertheless, on this beautiful evening where I live, I want everyone to know that I am genuinely grateful to everyone who has taken the time to support the petition. It might not change anything in the grand scheme (I still hope it will), but it has changed me. I now believe that the next time I step forward, there will be others who will once again ensure that I don’t feel alone...THANK YOU!!!
