The Issue

Indiana is one of the only states without an official state mammal. It’s time to fill that blank with a creature that literally carries our name. The Indiana Bat.

It was first discovered right here in our own backyard (Wyandotte Cave), making it a true native. However, it shares more than just a namesake; it’s a silent hero for our states economy and environment.

Every single night these bats go to work for Indiana by consuming thousands of crop damaging insects and increasing pollination, as well as, seed distribution. They are the ultimate natural pest control for our farmers, and play an essential role of our Hoosier ecosystem.

Therefore, we are petitioning the Indiana General Assembly to officially designate the Indiana Bat as our State Mammal. By signing this petition, you aren’t just picking a favorite animal- you are:

  • Supporting Indiana Farmers by highlighting natural pest control.
  • Promoting Conservation for an endangered native species.
  • Providing An Educational Legacy for Our Youth by shining the spotlight, and giving educators yet another tool to teach about local ecology, biology, and conservation.

Let’s show our legislators that we value our natural heritage! Sign your name today, and help The Indiana Bat take its rightful place in the State House! 🦇
