IS SPANISH SCIENCE FACING AN IRREVERSIBLE CRISIS? TAKE ACTION!

Feb 26, 2018 — IS SPANISH SCIENCE FACING AN IRREVERSIBLE CRISIS? TAKE ACTION!

The signers of this petition denounce the situation of progressive neglect of Spanish science caused by the ongoing cuts in investment in science by the current government of Spain. To the cuts is added the non-execution of several budget items. Positions, support for scientific infrastructures and subsidies for projects have all been restricted. This culminated in an unacceptable decrease in the number and amount of subsidies corresponding to the 2017 call for Projects of the State Research, Development and Innovation Program (I+D+i). To the decrease of funds for science should be added the one-year delay in implementation of the new R&D&I State Plan (2017-2020) and the uncertainty about financial and human resources with which it will be applied. This state of affairs has a negative impact on the entire system of science and technology in the country and dramatically affects young researchers who are not able to establish new work groups. Science is a cultural and economic engine of a country and not supporting it means aggravating the country's economic deficit and job insecurity, as documented in national and international reports. Therefore, we appeal to scientists, academics, scientific societies, trade unions, and other organizations concerned with the social situation of our country to undertake the actions that are within our reach to try to correct in the current situation. The commitment to science and society requires us to do so.
