River Tamirabarani comprises of 8 reservoirs within which it has 11 channels. Seven tributaries from hills and mountains and five tributaries from plains join the river. From its source it flows through the districts of Tirunelveli and tuticorin for about 120 kms and ends at 'Punnaikayal' and ends at the Gulf of Mannar.
The average rainfall along the river's mainland is 1082 mm. The total mainland area of the river is about 5969 sq.kms where 5317 sq.kms belong to Tirunelveli district and 652 sq.kms to the Tuticorin district. The river's mainland area comprises of about 78% of the total land area of Tirunelveli district.
The total number of wells along the mainland's of the river is 71064. Number of ponds is 1300. The quantity of water contained by the ponds equals 196 millions litres approximately. With the help of the river nearly 40000 acres in Tirunelveli and 46107 acres in Tuticorin so totally 86107 acres of land are used for irrigation. The type of farming during the northeast monsoon that is from October to march is called the 'Pisana saagubadi (Harvest)'. During the South west monsoon between June 15 to september 15 is 'Kaar sagubadi'. During the 'Kaar sagubadi' about 86% of rice is being farmed. Also a special harvest named 'Pazhanthozhi' is also maintained at the reservoirs of area Maruthur and Srivaigundam depending upon the water availability.
