It is reported that the Korea Press Ethics Committee has officially issued “warnings” to 16 media outlets for referring to the proposed tax-related amendment as the “Cha Eun-woo Prevention Act.” The Committee stated that this type of reporting risked damaging Cha Eun-woo’s honour, reputation, and human rights, especially since similar tax controversies have involved multiple public figures and were not unique to him.
The amendment itself concerns restrictions on entertainment business operators convicted under tax evasion laws. However, the Press Ethics Committee emphasized that attaching Cha Eun-woo’s name to the legislation was irresponsible and could unfairly stigmatize him regardless of the legal outcome or intent of the bill.
Importantly, the Committee highlighted that the media has a duty to protect individual dignity and avoid sensationalized labelling that harms public figures. They also referenced a previous case where media outlets were warned for using celebrity names to describe unrelated criminal methods, citing concerns over reputational harm and unethical reporting practices.
