Please help support renters rights by clicking here to email your MP to ask them to strengthen the Renters’ Rights Bill. It only takes one minute!
Thanks for supporting my petition. The good news is – politicians are listening! The government are working on a Renters’ Rights Bill which is a big improvement on the last government’s Renters (Reform) Bill.
The government have taken on some of the demands renters organisations have been calling for, like longer notice periods for renters, and an immediate end to section 21 when the bill passes.
But the bill won’t address the high cost of rent people are struggling with, and landlords will still be able to evict renters for no fault of their own – for example when selling up – so renters need more protection in those cases.
If you agree that the legislation could be made stronger, you can easily contact your local MP using this form: https://rentersreformcoalition.eaction.org.uk/help-strengthen-renters-rights. It’s a very simple tool and emailing MPs could have a big impact on efforts to strengthen the legislation.
It’s run by the Renters’ Reform Coalition, who are calling for the government to strengthen the bill in these ways:
- Two months’ rent compensation to help renters cover the cost of unwanted moves after an eviction
- Stopping renters being forced out by unfair rent hikes, by bringing in a cap on how much landlords can increase rents within a tenancy
- Allowing renters to pause rent payments (mediated by a third party) in cases of serious disrepair that the landlord won’t address
- Setting up a National Rental Affordability Commission to investigate ways to making renting cheaper
There is a letter already written but if you want to put it in your own words and talk about your own experiences renting that is even better, and will be much more persuasive.
Thanks for all your support already – if you can, please share this petition and the email form with friends!
