Give free school travel to children who have to move away to temporary accommodation

The Issue

Greater Manchester’s homeless parents face an impossible choice.

Thousands of our families are in temporary homeless accommodation, miles from their original home.

Often, that means parents at their lowest have to pay for school buses they never needed to before.

So their choice is simple: Try and find the money to keep their children in the classroom, or move schools.

It’s a choice we believe no parent should make.

That’s why we call on Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, to implement a free bus pass for children in temporary accommodation more than a 30-minute walk from their original school.

Keeping children in school when everything else in their lives is changing isn't just better for their education, it maintains their friendships, allows schools to support their whole family and gives them the stability they need more above anything else.

Join the Manchester Evening News and ManchesterWorld to call on the mayor to act and act now.

Please support our petition and share it with your friends and family.
