Give Fort Vancouver High School A Gender Neutral Stall Bathroom

Give Fort Vancouver High School A Gender Neutral Stall Bathroom
The Issue
Fort Vancouver High School is a school with over 100 trans students and has one single stall bathroom available to them. It has even more queer students that do not feel safe using gendered bathrooms due to the abundance of undisciplined harassment and hate crimes targeted towards LGBTQIA+ students. The one single stall bathroom we do have access too is constantly used by cis students that are using it upwards of 40 minutes which restricts members from the transgender community to be able to use the bathroom. This has been a problem we have been fighting for YEARS. Yes, binary trans people (trans men and women) are allowed to use the gendered bathrooms but most do not feel safe (for very valid reasons that have been proven true) and our non-binary students don’t have a stall bathroom. Our school’s GSA has talked to the principal, the superintendent, and several members of the district to change the signage on one of the girls bathrooms to a gender neutral bathroom sign so that anyone can use that bathroom, trans, cis, queer, or straight. We have given them the studies that say how trans people are affected in gendered bathrooms, we have given them research, we have given them all the answers to their concerns and they have given us NOTHING, absolutely nothing in return. They have refused to give us a simple signage change after so much work from students saying that WE NEED CHANGE. It has been too long, we have waited long enough. It is a basic human right to be able to use the bathroom and the trans students at Fort Vancouver High School are tired of being denied that. We will not give up no matter how much they try and silence us. We are tired of not being able to use the bathroom, tired of getting UTIs from having to hold it too long, tired of getting harassed by being in bathrooms, we are tired of being denied our basic human rights.
