Give Families a Chance to Own a Home, Create a Government Backed First Home Savings Scheme

Give Families a Chance to Own a Home, Create a Government Backed First Home Savings Scheme
The Issue
As a mum who has lived through the struggles of trying to save for a first home deposit while raising a family, I know firsthand how discouraging and overwhelming the system can be. Every parent dreams of providing a stable and secure home for their children, a place that offers safety, belonging, and the foundation for a better future. But with rising living costs, high rent, and strict rules around savings, that dream is slipping further away for families like mine.
Even with careful budgeting and doing everything possible, many families cannot break into the housing market. This is not just a financial issue. It is emotional and deeply personal. It affects children’s wellbeing, parents’ mental health, and the long-term stability every family deserves. The current system places these hopes and dreams out of reach for far too many.
For this reason, I am asking the government to create a protected first-home savings scheme that genuinely supports families. This scheme should be secure and backed by the government so families feel confident in saving. It should offer fair interest and tax advantages to help savings grow. It must protect savings from being counted against benefits so parents are not punished for trying to build a better future. It should allow families to save specifically for a first home deposit without fear of losing those savings during emergencies, and it should be flexible so families with different financial situations can access it.
At the moment, first-time buyers make up only a small portion of the housing market because so many people are priced out entirely. A protected savings scheme would give families a real chance to save for a home. It would support economic stability, strengthen communities, and offer hope to a generation that feels shut out of home ownership.
I am asking policymakers to listen to families like mine. We do not want handouts. We want a fair chance. A protected savings scheme could be the opportunity so many families need to move forward. Please join me by supporting this initiative. Your signature can help push for real change and create a brighter, more secure future for our children and grandchildren.
