Give Dublin a Designated Love Lock Location
The Issue
A petition calling on Dublin City Council to explore a dedicated place for love locks in Dublin City.
Love locks have become a recognised tradition in cities around the world. People attach padlocks as symbols of love, friendship, remembrance and meaningful moments in their lives.
Yet in many cities, these locks end up attached to bridges, railings and other public infrastructure, sometimes creating maintenance, safety and structural concerns.
We believe Dublin deserves a better solution.
We are calling on Dublin City Council to explore the creation of a designated, purpose-built Love Lock installation in Dublin City: a permanent, attractive and accessible place where people can participate in this tradition responsibly.
Why Dublin?
Dublin has a unique historical connection with Saint Valentine. The relics associated with the saint have been housed at Whitefriar Street Church since 1836, following their presentation to the church by Pope Gregory XVI.
Remarkably, this part of Dublin's heritage remains relatively unknown to many residents and visitors.
A designated Love Lock installation would provide an opportunity to celebrate this connection while creating something meaningful for the wider community.
This is not intended to be a religious initiative. It is about celebrating love as a universal human experience, welcoming people of every background, belief and generation.
What are we proposing?
We want Dublin to explore the development of a purpose-built installation where people can leave a lock as a symbol of:
- Romantic love and relationships.
- Family bonds and friendship.
- Remembrance of loved ones.
- Hope, kindness and new beginnings.
- Community and human connection.
- The installation could become a distinctive public feature, attracting residents and visitors while encouraging people to discover more about Dublin's heritage.
- Growing Community and Civic Interest
- The proposal has already attracted encouraging initial interest from people across Dublin's arts, community and civic sectors.
Dublin Canvas's Project Coordinator described the concept as a winner, with the potential to be hugely successful if implemented.
Local elected representatives have also welcomed the proposal, with offers to help facilitate engagement with Dublin City Council and identify appropriate channels for progressing the idea.
Dublin South City Partnership has expressed interest and referred the proposal to its Community Development team for consideration.
These are early expressions of interest and support rather than formal organisational endorsements or commitments. Nevertheless, they demonstrate an opportunity to bring together local communities, cultural organisations, businesses and public representatives to explore making the idea a reality.
Now we want to hear from the public.
What are we asking Dublin City Council to do?
We are asking Dublin City Council to:
- Explore suitable locations for a designated Love Lock installation within Dublin City.
- Consult with local residents, businesses, community groups and relevant stakeholders.
- Assess the engineering, structural safety, accessibility and maintenance requirements.
- Explore opportunities for public art, community participation and potential funding.
- Work with relevant heritage and cultural organisations to recognise Dublin's unique connection with Saint Valentine.
- We recognise that any installation must be properly designed, professionally assessed and maintained. We are not asking for something to be installed without the necessary planning, consultation or permissions.
We are asking the city to explore the possibility.
Help Us Make It Happen
Dublin has an opportunity to create something distinctive: a place where people can celebrate the relationships, memories and connections that matter to them.
A simple padlock can represent a lifetime of memories, a promise, a friendship or someone who will never be forgotten.
Let's give Dublin a place for that tradition.
Sign the petition and help us make a designated Love Lock location in Dublin a reality.
