Give Castlemaine a Voice: Support Local Jobs, and the Forest St Commercial Development
The issue
For months, the local online narrative and street protests from groups like "MAC OFF" have claimed that Castlemaine completely rejects the proposed McDonald's development at 72-80 Forest Street. But a loud online minority does not speak for the entire town.We are a silent majority of hard-working parents, busy shift workers, local business managers, and young people who welcome this proposed $3.5 million private investment into a vacant, commercially zoned site. Why we are signing to SUPPORT this development:100+ Local Jobs & Training: This project will provide direct youth employment, flexible working hours for families, and structured, nationally accredited hospitality training right here in town.Affordable Choice & Convenience: While Castlemaine's independent cafes are exceptional, working families, late-night shift workers, and everyday locals deserve an affordable, predictable food and coffee option with a convenient drive-through.Developing an Eyresore Block: The site at the corner of Forest and Wheeler Streets is already zoned commercial and has sat vacant. A clean, modern build is a vastly better use of the land than leaving an empty lot.The Regional Precedent: Our neighbors in Kyneton recognized the need for commercial growth. Despite initial pushback, VCAT approved the massive "Cornerstone: Kyneton" retail precinct on Edgecombe Road. Civil construction is already underway, and a new McDonald's is locked in to open there by early 2027. Castlemaine shouldn't miss out on local economic benefits and lose retail spending to surrounding shires. We petition the Mount Alexander Shire Council to evaluate the upcoming planning application purely on its strict economic merits, job creation potential, and planning law—rather than bowing to targeted internet pressure.Stop hindering our town's economic progress. Sign to show your support for jobs, growth, and freedom of choice in Castlemaine!
