Hey everyone! I’m so sorry for the lack of updates lately, thank you to all for your support. Scrolling through Facebook this morning, I saw a video posted up by Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, stating that this Friday there will be a bill that will be voted on by MPs to bring the voting age down to 16. Now, I didn’t hear about this before then, so I’m not sure whether many of you were in the know either. We need to make sure that enough MPs vote so that this bill can get passed through. So what can you do about it? Please, please, please write to your MP using this link here: https://www.writetothem.com/ Here are a few points to help you get started: - I am one of the 7000 supporters who signed a petition on Change.org to lower the voting age to 16. - The petition was started by Maymunah Azad, a 16 year old student who wanted to vote in the General Election this year. - Allowing the vote for 16 year olds will ensure a greater representation of people in Parliament and will give the young an opportunity to express their wishes about their futures - Other countries such as Austria, Argentina, Brazil and several self governing British Crown Dependencies (Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey) have allowed the vote at 16 - *Here you could mention why you signed and your own personal experiences for why the vote should be allowed at 16 - The bill will be voted on on Friday 3rd November in Parliament. Please vote on behalf of your constituents. Hope the above pointers were useful. If enough of us send a letter to our MPs we can persuade them to vote for the bill and get it passed through. And honestly, thank you all so much for your support. It might be too late for me, but it isn’t too late for all the other young people who have just as much to right to vote as the over 18s. Thank you
