Giustizia per l'opera di Orlando Sora al Teatro della Società di Lecco

E, per conoscenza, ai Membri del Consiglio Comunale

Chiediamo che venga garantita una permanente e trasparente contestualizzazione dell’opera di Orlando Sora sulla volta del Teatro della Società di Lecco.

Il dipinto originale fu il frutto di un enorme sacrificio fisico dell'artista. A causa della presenza di amianto nella struttura della volta, Orlando Sora non poté realizzare l'opera con la tecnica dell'affresco e dovette ricorrere alla pittura acrilica. Lavorò per mesi sull'impalcatura, in condizioni particolarmente difficili, a stretto contatto con materiali che oggi sappiamo essere altamente nocivi.
I recenti e inderogabili lavori di bonifica hanno comportato il taglio delle figure e specifici trattamenti per liberarle dalle fibre di amianto; la successiva ricomposizione, con evidenti incollature e ridipinture che cercano di imitare la mano del maestro, ha inevitabilmente trasformato l’aspetto originario dell’opera. Di conseguenza, il dipinto oggi visibile sulla volta del teatro si presenta difforme da quello realizzato da Orlando Sora nel 1979, essendone stata modificata l’impronta esecutiva iniziale.

Per rispetto alla verità storica e alla memoria dell’artista, i sottoscritti firmatari chiedono:

     La revisione dell’attribuzione dell’opera. La paternità ufficiale non può più essere indicata semplicemente come "il dipinto di Orlando Sora", ma deve essere correttamente definita come "Frammenti del dipinto di Orlando Sora, ricomposti e ridipinti dopo il restauro" (o formula equivalente).

     Accessibilità alla documentazione e confronto. Venga resa stabilmente fruibile al pubblico all'interno del teatro (tramite schermo o QR code) la documentazione fotografica dell'opera precedente ai lavori, consentendo di ammirare il dipinto nella sua configurazione primitiva.  

Chiedere questo significa rispettare il lavoro di Orlando Sora e garantire al pubblico una corretta comprensione della storia dell’opera. Significa permettere, a chi osserva oggi la volta del teatro, di conoscere non soltanto ciò che è visibile dopo il restauro, ma anche il dipinto che l’artista realizzò nel 1979 e che le fotografie storiche documentano integralmente nella sua originaria bellezza.

Al di là di ogni valutazione sul risultato finale, riteniamo che il pubblico abbia il diritto di conoscere la storia dell'opera e di vederne la documentazione precedente ai lavori.

Justice for Orlando Sora's Artwork at the Teatro della Società in Lecco

We demand that a permanent and transparent contextualization of Orlando Sora's artwork on the vault of the Teatro della Società in Lecco be guaranteed.

The original painting was the result of an immense physical sacrifice by the artist. Due to the presence of asbestos in the vault structure, Orlando Sora could not execute the artwork using the fresco technique and had to resort to acrylic paint. He worked for months on scaffolding under particularly harsh conditions, in close contact with materials that we now know to be highly harmful.
Recent and mandatory hazardous waste removal works involved cutting the figures and applying specific treatments to free them from asbestos fibers. The subsequent recomposition, featuring evident seams and overpainting that attempts to imitate the master's hand, has inevitably transformed the original appearance of the artwork. Consequently, the painting currently visible on the theater's vault differs from the one created by Orlando Sora in 1979, as its original brushwork and execution have been altered. 

Out of respect for historical truth and the artist's memory, the undersigned petitioners request:

     A revision of the artwork's attribution. The official authorship can no longer be stated simply as "the painting by Orlando Sora," but must be correctly defined as "Fragments of the painting by Orlando Sora, recomposed and overpainted after restoration" (or an equivalent phrasing).

     Accessibility to documentation and comparison. The photographic documentation of the artwork prior to the works must be permanently accessible to the public inside the theater (via a screen or QR code), allowing visitors to admire the painting in its original configuration. 

Demanding this means doing justice to Orlando Sora's work and ensuring that the public correctly understands the history of the piece. It means allowing those who look at the theater vault today to know not only what is visible after the restoration, but also the painting that the artist created in 1979, which historical photographs document entirely in its native beauty.

Regardless of differing opinions about the final outcome, we believe that the public has the right to know the history of the artwork and to have access to documentation showing its appearance before the restoration works.
