Good Morning!
It is with GREAT pleasure that we write today to inform you that WE WON in NSW!
Last week, the Department of Education amended it's policy to add weapons companies to the list of inappropriate sponsors - and we couldn't have done it without you!
See it for yourself here!
We now have policy on our side in NSW, VIC, ACT, and QLD - so if you know anyone in the South Australia please send them the above image! We know that the Federal Government is looking to bolster the weapons industry, especially naval equipment, in South Australia - and there are already dedicated "defence TAFEs" over there.
Furthermore, the fight is not over on the East coast. While it is a huge win to see this policy change come through, the programs will not be pulled from classrooms overnight. Furthermore, many programs are operated by a shell institution, such as "First Australia" or "Regional Development Australia" - which acts as an intermediary between the school and the weapons company. This is paper thin, but we're betting the arms dealers will try to use this as a loop-hole to side-step the intentions of the policy. We cannot allow it.
In this next phase of the campaign, we will be reaching out to East coast schools directly to inform them exactly which programs are sponsored by whom, as shown in the diagram above. To stay in touch with us, and find out how you can support us to make sure these words are backed up with action - sign up to our mailing list at teachersforpeace.com.au (you don't have to be a teacher to join!)
Your support is invaluable, and we thank you for helping us carry the campaign this far. We hope you will join us as we continue this fight to kick the military industrial complex out of the classroom, and educate for a safe and peaceful world.
Stay in touch and wherever and however you can,
Demilitarise,
Decolonise,
Regenerate.
