GET NOSEY: Demand for a Public Registry of Violent Offenders in South Africa

The Issue

In the last 12 months, more than 5,500 women in South Africa were murdered. Thousands more screamed, begged, resisted. And too often, nobody came.

This cannot continue.

Gender-based violence thrives in silence, secrecy, and anonymity. We are told to mind our own business, to look away, to stay out of it. But violence survives when communities don’t ask questions.

It’s time to Get Nosey.

We are calling for a lawful, transparent and easily accessible - “for all persons, at any and all times” - public registry of  violent offenders, including perpetrators of GBV, domestic violence, sexual assault, and violent crimes. Communities have the right to know who poses a risk in their midst. Safety should not depend on whispers after harm has already been done. This should be thorough, and constantly be updated to the public - we need clear communication channels from valid publications.

Getting nosey means:

• Knowing your neighbour

• Knowing who has a history of violence

• Listening when something feels wrong

• Hearing survivors

• Responding before another name is added to the list

This is not about revenge. It’s about prevention, accountability, and protection. It’s about shifting power away from perpetrators and back into communities.

Violence is all our business.

Silence is complicity.

If not now - when?
