Hello lovely people!!
It’s FRIYAY! To help you celebrate, here’s some amazing news. The BBC smashed the period taboo this morning when they openly discussed period pain at work. They released a super interesting poll via YouGov that directly asks women about their period-related experiences. It is awesome.
52% of the 1,000 female workers interviewed by YouGov explained that period pains have affected their ability to work to such an extent that a third of these women have taken at least one day of sick leave as a result. Despite this striking number, only 27% felt comfortable enough to replay their period-induced struggles to their employers – only 27%!
There’s something wrong here. Period pain is a problem. It needs to be discussed and debated openly if we are ever going to overcome it. A debate has sparked since these statistics were released about whether ‘menstrual leave’ should be introduced, granting women and trans men days off work if necessary. This could be helpful, but a more practical option may be to give those who menstruate more flexible hours or allow hot water bottles into the workplace when needs be. Let me know your thoughts! Whatever the solution, we need to talk about period pain to reach it. Period. And the BBC is a MASSIVE powerhouse helping us to do just that!
Enjoy your weekend!
Laura :)
