Here's a summary of what David Gauke, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, had to say: "Thank you for your letter to The Chancellor of the Exchequer about VAT on sanitary products. I am replying as Minister responsible for this policy area. I should explain that the application of VAT in the EU, including rates and flexibilities afforded to Member States in the regard, is governed by EU law. While it would be possible, in principle, to negotiate changes to EU law in this area, this would requite a proposal from the European Commission and the unanimous agreement of all 28 Member States. Thank you for taking the trouble to make us aware of these concerns." This type of change has never been done before. However, it is far from impossible. The EU is always open to fresh, positive publicity that will make a real difference to men and women across the continent.
