Generation titles.

The Issue

It's simple, it's not too much to ask.

I'm sure you have heard of the generation names 'Millennial' or 'Gen Z', I want to make a change to these names. You see, the cutoff point for Gen Z is people born in 2012, however I believe that this is not very fair because 2012 and 2013 born children all grew up together in the same generation and are even classmates. 2014 on the other hand, are separate because they grew up with more 2015 children and they are closer. 2013 born children are currently classed as Gen Alpha.

After speaking with some young people, I have realised that most 2013 born children do not like to be classified as Gen Alpha because they have to be associated with the younger years. This is a problem for them because of something called 'brain rot'. It is a social media type of slang that includes words that do not make much sense. People assume that all Gen Alpha children are 'brain rotted' and according to the young people, those stereotypes are actually quite hurtful.

This gives unnecessary stress to those young people who do not like being associated with the younger years (2014 born children and so on) because of this issue. They do not appreciate being classified as brain rotted kids. Though this may not sound like a large issue, and I will admit it is small, if we make a change, young people will feel heard and we be assured that people are listening to their voices. We should change the Gen Z cutoff from 1995 - 2012 to 1995 - 2013. It's a small change that will go a long way.
