Gender Neutral Bathrooms in Hobart
The issue
Who we are and why we need you: we are YAS (Youth Advisory Squad), and we are on a mission to make sure there are more all-gender bathrooms in Hobart city, but we need YOUR help. This is why you should sign this, even if you feel it doesn’t affect you.
Often, gender non-conforming people struggle with not having a bathroom that matches how they identify. Even people who have bathrooms that match their gender don’t always feel welcome or safe in those bathrooms. Here is what some young people said:
“It’s very important for trans people to feel safe using public bathrooms, and an all-gender space is essential so that nonbinary and gender diverse people (or just binary trans people who feel unsafe in gendered spaces whatever that reason may be) are able to live comfortably in society. Nobody is equal unless we all are.” – Finn he/him
River explained: “Having to enter a toilet filled with adult, cisgender men, I personally find an extremely scary and intimidating experience. What if they could just tell that I wasn’t assigned male at birth? What if they could tell and decided to hurt me or shame me because of who I am? (I am a transgender man).”
He also expressed that some friends feel similarly: “Being met with two toilets just reading ‘Male’ and ’Female’, they are scared to enter either toilet because everyone might perceive them differently. I might pass, but what if I don’t pass enough? All we want to do is use the toilet like everybody else” – River he/him
Izzy said: “I’m a genderfluid person so sometimes I feel feminine, so it feels ok going into a women’s bathroom but if I’m masculine then it feels really dysphoric if there’s not all gender toilets” – Izzy any/all pronoun
”I often feel like I don’t belong in either the male or female bathrooms, and I feel strange using the disabled bathrooms when there could be people that need them. People always tell me which bathroom to go in, and that shouldn’t be a problem anyone should have to deal with, which is why gender neutral toilets are important.” -Rory, they/he
