UCB's Long Range Development Plan Must Work for Berkeley

UCB's Long Range Development Plan Must Work for Berkeley
The Issue
UCB's latest plan to develop a small area around its Berkeley campus to accommodate 48,000+ students is poorly thought-out and punitive to all Berkeley residents, particularly those individuals whom UCB has taken steps to evict from their rent-controlled apartments. All Berkeley residents will see increased traffic, congestion and pollution; renters will be particularly challenged as new housing is swallowed up by UCB to accommodate its swelling student and faculty population. UCB's plan to demolish multiple cherished Berkeley landmarks to make way for multiple large (17 story) mixed-use commercial buildings with some low-density luxury student accommodations is offensive. Students get singles and washers and driers in their luxury units while residents get eviction notices! What is worse is that UC expects Berkeley taxpayers to pay for the upgrades to infrastructure (sewers, streets etc) and increased police and fire services that will be needed if UCB's population grows by this astronomical amount. UC should propose a better plan!
