Stop CDCR Outbreak: Releases Not Transfers

The Issue

Update: On December 23rd 2020, the California Supreme Court ruled to send the Von Staich Habeas case back down to the Court of Appeals, essentially vacating the order to reduce San Quentin State Prison’s population by 50%. While this ruling has reduced the immediate threat of large-scale involuntary transfers from San Quentin State Prison, the #StopSanQuentinOutbreak coalition continues to call for RELEASES to combat the outbreak of COVID-19 across California prisons.

We join countless community advocates, loved ones, and currently incarcerated people in demanding that Governor Newsom and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) urgently reduce prison populations across California through large-scale releases without categorical exclusions.

For the first time since the pandemic, CDCR is battling COVID-19 outbreaks in all of its 34 prisons statewide. Governor Newsom and CDCR must prioritize public health by drastically reducing prison populations across California during this height of CDCR’s COVID crisis.

If you support the safe, responsible release of medically vulnerable people from prisons to their communities and families, please sign this petition to demand that CDCR and Governor Newsom GRANT RELEASES NOW!
