Georgia Tech - GATech - Coronavirus - Online Classes
The Issue
Georgia Tech University poses a serious risk to the spread of the Coronavirus among students, faculty, administration, and their families. This risk significantly intensifies with Spring break. GA Tech administration needs to close campus at Spring break and shift all classes online to ensure the safety of its constituents.
Coronavirus is spreading rapidly throughout the world. As of March 10, there are approximately 1,000 cases in the United States with case numbers double every two days. Even if this slows to doubling every three days, within one month we will have 1 million cases in the United States.
Responsible universities, including Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, U Washington, U Cal Berkeley, Ohio State, MIT, Tufts, Smith, Amherst, and MANY others have already moved classes online to combat the spread of Coronavirus. It is time for GA Tech to join their ranks.
Spring break is a critical time. Students will travel to all parts of the United States and the world, traveling through airports, train and bus stations, and on airplanes, trains and buses. Some of us will contract the virus. We will then all return through similar routes, ensuring that the virus is brought to campus. It is time for the university to act prudently to protect its students and employees and to responsibly act to stop this continued spread of Coronavirus. Spring break doesn’t simply put GA Tech at risk, it puts all of Atlanta and therefore all of Georgia at risk as well.
This isn’t a question of if; it is a question of when. It is critical, in order to preserve health care resources nationwide, that we try to slow the spread of the disease as much as possible. For the school to continue to operate, waiting for multiple cases to emerge on campus before shifting online, is the height of irresponsibility.
Coronavirus is incredibly contagious. It has proven, thus far, to be impossible to stop its spread. It spread rapidly throughout China, Italy, and South Korea, despite strong measures by governments. It has spread rapidly through cruise ships despite intensive quarantine efforts. It has spread throughout the retirement home community in Seattle, placing hundreds of seniors lives at risk. It has begun to spread throughout the United States as well, and many States, Cities and Colleges have responded.
GA Tech is a premier, forward thinking, technology based, University. Administration needs to declare now to shift classes online following spring break and to ask students not to return to campus. It is the only responsible way to protect students, faculty, administration, and Atlanta.
Please share this petition with everyone you think may benefit – students, faculty, employees, media, government, residents of Atlanta, etc.
