Reassuring first step for the Save Woodside Ferries campaign

The Save Woodside Ferries Action Group has been reassured by Merseytravel that no decisions over the future of Mersey Ferries will be taken this week. The Group, which had asked for the decision to be postponed to allow local residents to make their feelings known, has welcomed this as a ‘reassuring first step’. The Group is using this ‘breathing space’ to prepare a plan for securing the future of the ferries, and it will submit a petition opposing the potential closure of Woodside Ferry Terminal, when it meets with the Chair of Merseytravel, Liam Robinson, at the end of January. Birkenhead’s MP Frank Field, the Group’s President, said: ‘Merseytravel have listened to our initial plea for some vital breathing space before any decisions are taken on Woodside. I hope their listening mode will continue as we present to them our plans for securing the ferries’ long-term future.’ Councillor Paul Doughty, the Group’s Chairman, said: ‘This is a reassuring first step. We now need local residents to show the extent of their support for the continuation of the ferries service, by joining us on Saturday to sign the Group’s petition to Merseytravel.’
