A chairde,
I would like to thank you all for your support with this campaign. We have gather over 720 signatures so far, which is fantastic. We have already made people aware of the campaign - and by extension of Julia Morrissey herself - on a wide scale.
But we need your help to make the next push with the #JuliaMorrisseyBridge campaign.
Galway City Council recently announced the creation of a 'Civic Commemoration Committee', which will consider the mayor's proposal to name the bridge after Alice Perry (along with other proposals).
Alice Perry's achievements were indeed commendable - she was one of the first women in Europe to graduate with a degree in engineering. however, she has already been honoured in Galway and further afield. The university's engineering building is named after her, while the council erected a commemorative plaque in the city (which is only a stone's throw from the new bridge). There is also an all-Ireland medal named in her honour.
We launched this campaign on the basis that it was high time for Julia Morrissey to be honoured in Galway. Your support has proven that this is indeed the case. However, we need your help again in order to make the Julia Morrissey Bridge a reality.
I would ask you all to please share this petition with family and friends, and to share it on all social media platforms using the hashtag #JuliaMorrisseyBridge. This will be a major help when presenting the petition to GCC.
Again, your support here is greatly appreciated.
Le Meas,
Ian Ó Dálaigh
