The movie is a mess, but it s a rich mess. There s wasted motion in the plotting and a fair amount of confusion in how the script spells out what Maleficent can and can t do (if she can turn a raven into a male sidekick played by Sam Riley with a wave of her hand, and create a fire-breathing dragon with similar ease later on, why doesn t she just unleash an army of monsters on the kingdom and save herself a lot of bother? He slices off her wings instead, and brings them to the king as proof that he did as promised.
