The Issue

WE DEMAND THAT THE CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTS THE PHILADELPHIA REPARATIONS TASK FORCE BY FUNDING IT WITH A 25 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET

Philadelphia is one of the poorest big cities in the United States. In 2019, Philadelphia’s population was 1,535,277 of which 24.3% were living in poverty. The majority of Black Philadelphians live in communities that experienced decades of neglect and disinvestment and now are targets of unrelenting gentrification. Our state’s minimum wage has been $7.25 since 2009. According to the Living Wage, a single person with no children in Philadelphia must make at least $18.14 an hour and $29.81 an hour is needed for one person with three children to live comfortably in our city. Philadelphia is just one portrait of the larger problem. The racial wealth gap of Black Americans nationally is staggering. In 2016, the net worth of an average white family was $171,000, a figure almost ten times greater than an American Freedmen family at $17,150. Since 1865, American Freedmen have maneuvered a system of oppressive tactics like redlining laws which kept them out of equity and wealth. If Black Americans cannot build generational wealth they will never be able to close the racial wealth gap.

On June 29th 2024, we asked Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier what is the City Of Philadelphia's level of investment in addressing the harms inflicted upon the Black American Descendants of U.S chattel slavery community since the #PhiladelphiaReparationsTaskForce is NOT CURRENTLY FUNDED. Her response is on CallieTaskedUs.org's Home Page.

Our community deserves the same level of investment and support #ReparationsNOW task forces are receiving across the country. As America turns 248 years old on July 4th, 2024. The City of Philadelphia MUST set the standard for:

TRUTH

RECONCILIATION

COMPENSATION

REHABILITATION

ATONEMENT

to the generational harms done to the Black American US Slavery Descendant community!

We will be scheduling weekly CALL-IN EVENTS they will be posted here and on the CallieTaskedUs.org's Home Page.
