Fund the National Weather Service

Fund the National Weather Service
The Issue
In recent years, I have witnessed a disturbing increase in the frequency of unwarned severe weather and tornadoes. The weather seems to be growing more unpredictable and dangerous, and this trend is deeply concerning to myself and many others. This escalating threat is not happening in isolation; it is, in part, a result of insufficient funding being allocated to the National Weather Service (NWS), largely due to budget cuts implemented during the Trump Administration.
These budget cuts have had an undeniably detrimental effect. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports that prior and ongoing budget reductions have affected the NWS's ability to effectively forecast and warn the public of severe weather events. This lack of adequate warning can put countless lives at risk and cause significant property damage, as communities remain unprepared for the extremity of the weather.
The National Weather Service is critical in collecting and analyzing weather data, providing timely forecasts, and issuing crucial alerts that help save lives and prevent damage. Yet, without sufficient financial support, its capacity to perform these essential functions is severely hindered.
According to the NWS Employees Organization, additional funding would enable the hiring of more meteorologists, allow for the development and procurement of advanced forecasting technology, and enhance overall capabilities in monitoring weather patterns. These changes are crucial in ensuring that the American public is adequately informed and protected against severe weather threats.
It is imperative that Congress reassess the budget allocations for the National Weather Service and make the decision to increase funding. Investing in the NWS is an investment in public safety and preparedness.
We must act now to ensure that our communities and families are safeguarded from the unpredictable and dangerous weather conditions that we are facing with alarming frequency. Demand that our lawmakers prioritize funding for the National Weather Service to protect our nation. Please join me in urging Congress to take decisive action by signing this petition today. Your signature can make a difference in pushing for change and ensuring a safer future for all.
