The power and importance of the Bridgeport Public Schools boys and girls middle school basketball experiences in Bridgeport can't be understated. So many of us have witnessed first-hand how these programs can positively impact young lives, providing students with teamwork skills and a sense of community responsibility. Unfortunately, this long standing middle school basketball program in our Bridgeport schools now faces a question of whether it will be funded for the very season that is now upon us. On Monday evening, the Board of Education will vote whether to fund this program. This is not just about sports, but it's about impacting the livelihood of hundreds of kids across the city.

Many of these students will be joining a team for the first time, sparking a love for sports, and instilling values such as discipline, leadership, and teamwork. Where transportation or finances may be a hindrance to them in joining an out of school softball or soccer league, this opportunity literally meets them where they are at. These teams are more than just games; they can truly provide a light in a child's life, and have high potential to impact their adulthood positively.

However, underfunding currently threatens the continuation of this essential program. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education states that sports programs encourage physical development, reduce obesity, and promote healthier lifestyles in adolescence, which then carries into adulthood. The failure to fund not only undermines the students' sporting experience, but it also deprives them of these critical developmental benefits.

This unique experience for our children and our city is in our hands. Please sign this petition and show your support for funding the middle school basketball program at Bridgeport Public Schools. Your signature is a step towards giving these students the enriching experience they deserve. If you can go a step further, please email our BOE board members, (emails here), this weekend to share your support for this program and/or come to tbe Bridgeport BOE board meeting at 6:00 PM on Monday, November 25 at Harding High School to be present for the vote and show your support. Your support can make a lasting impact for the children in Bridgeport.
