Scotland’s colleges are the beating heart of our communities — supporting young people, adult returners, apprentices, and students with additional needs. Yet right now, the sector is under severe financial pressure.

Audit Scotland has confirmed that college funding has fallen by around 20% in real terms since 2021/22, with further cuts expected next year.

The EIS-FELA 2025 report highlights the impact of years of under-investment — fewer staff, reduced courses, and limited support for our most vulnerable learners.

Many colleges are now warning that vital programmes in Supported Education, Community Learning, and Core Skills are at risk.

This is not sustainable.

We need urgent action and a long-term funding model that recognises the essential role colleges play in Scotland’s economy, skills system, and wellbeing.
