In the Philippines alone, 467 oil spills were recorded between 2000 and 2021, damaging coral reefs, mangroves, fisheries, and the livelihoods of countlkess families. Globally, thousands of oil spills are reported each year, releasing toxic substances that poison marine life and disrupt fragile ecosystems.

Traditional oil spill cleanup methods are often costly, time-consuming, and environmentally harmful, leaving long-term damage to both nature and people. Cleanup workers are also exposed to health risks such as asthma and respiratory illnesses.

Despite the devastating effects, water pollution prevention and oil spill response remain overlooked issues. Without sustainable and effective solutions, marine biodiversity, food security, and human health will continue to be at risk.

This is why we, H.A.R.B.O.R. (Hair-boom Arduino-based Recovery Boat for Oil Removal), are advocating for stronger action against water pollution. Through eco-friendly technologies like our Arduino-powered recovery boat that uses biodegradable hair booms, we aim to prove that innovative, low-cost, and sustainable methods can help prevent further environmental destruction.
