The Issue

Petition to Transform Underused Railroad Tracks into a Vibrant Pedestrian Path

There is an underused railroad line on the northwest side of Chicago. As a community, we want to turn this rail line into a multi-use pedestrian and bike path called the Crosstown Trail.

  • The proposed trail would run from Cortland to Montrose, three blocks east of Cicero along an underused rail easement.
  • On the north end, it could connect to the southern tip of the Weber Spur trail and, with a short road connection, to the western end of the Bloomingdale trail, the heart of the 606.
  • In total, the trail would add 40 acres of community parkway for the people of Chicago.

This is a community inspired and led effort. As a part of the Chicagoland community, please sign the below petition to show your support for the Crosstown Trail.

Everyone in your household can sign up, including kids of all ages!

By converting this rail line into a pedestrian and cycling path, we can:

  • Improve access to safe, car-free routes for walking, running, and biking.
  • Create new green space.
  • Connect existing trails and neighborhoods, fostering stronger community ties.
  • Support the city’s climate goals by encouraging low-carbon transportation.
  • We believe this trail would be a transformative addition to Chicago’s infrastructure, benefiting residents, visitors, and future generations.
