Accessibility on College Campuses (Specifically UNH)
Accessibility on College Campuses (Specifically UNH)
The Issue
The lack of proper accessibility on campus is an issue because people who are not able-bodied are being left out of things simply because they do not have access to them. Not every building on the UNH campus has a ramp or an elevator which impacts people’s education. The buildings that do have ramps and/or elevators, those things are pushed towards the back causing the person to take the long way to get into a building which sort of defeats the purpose of having things be accessible. Likewise, during the winter months, sidewalks are not taken care of properly and when they are shoveled, the snow piles are pushed to the edge of the sidewalk, making it difficult and sometimes impossible for someone who is not able-bodied to get up onto it. People who are able-bodied do not think about the lack of accessibility because it does not affect them so it is not on their minds. Non able-bodied people are considered the “other” group, or “not in the norm” and are forced to deal with the aftermath of building construction and weather because they are not considered very often by the predominant group.
