Let's talk about Shankar, the African elephant, held captive in the Delhi zoo. His enclosure is adjacent to a busy railway line in New Delhi. Every time we have visited Shankar's enclosure, we have heard a loud train whistle every few minutes. The vet who inspected Shankar recently suspects that Shankar has probably lost a part of his hearing as he has been in that enclosure for close to a decade.
