The civilian rescue ship SEA-EYE 4 has been detained by the Italian Coast Guard because too many people have been rescued. Join us in demanding the immediate release of the ship before more people drown in the Mediterranean Sea.

The SEA-EYE 4 rescued 408 people seeking protection from distress at sea in the Mediterranean. When the ship entered the port of Palermo after quarantine at sea, it was inspected by the Italian Coast Guard for 12 hours until sufficient specious reasons for detention were found. The German authorities had certified the ship as safe and suitable a few weeks earlier.

In comparison to last year, this year more than twice as many people have drowned in the Mediterranean. The blockade of rescue ships is causing even more deaths.

To the Federal Government: Act immediately!

The German government must no longer stand idly by and watch the deaths. That is why we expect the German government to finally take action.

Andreas Scheuer:

As a member of a Christian party, it is your duty and responsibility to stand up against dying and for the protection of human life. As Minister of Transport, you are responsible for ships flying the German flag. Finally, you must make it clear to the Italian authorities: The German government will not tolerate the repeated illegal detention of German rescue ships by Italian authorities in order to prevent rescue operations.

Heiko Maas:

As foreign minister, you said: You could not stand for people fleeing being taken back to Libya. Just as you cannot simply accept the deaths in the Mediterranean.

Contact the Italian authorities to ensure that the SEA-EYE 4 is released immediately and that German rescue ships are not further obstructed and their crews criminalized. You have all the necessary contacts. There is no reason for inaction.

Horst Seehofer:

Civil society has created over 250 safe harbours. Finally, take responsibility.

Italy and other Mediterranean countries must not be abandoned just because they are located at the Mediterranean and not at Lake Constance. Let the municipalities and cities finally have room for humanity and solidarity: We have room!

Angela Merkel:

You are aware of the power of your voice and the power of your directive authority. Do your part to hand Germany over to the next federal government as a country of solidarity. We do not agree with defaming, criminalizing and preventing the saving of human lives. Let your euphonious words finally be followed by actions, by which we want to evaluate you! Our Europe is solidary! Our Europe saves! Do not stop us any longer and finally support us in a concrete way!

Background: This year alone, twice as many people have drowned in the Mediterranean as last year. Under Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, civilian rescue at sea is being detained more frequently than under former Interior Minister Salvini. Italian politicians openly emphasize that Italy has to take care of fewer people because there is no European solidarity and reception.

This ignorance - made in Berlin - is deadly!
