In 2005, the author Matt Furie released a comic series containing a frog named Pepe. He grew into an internet meme. But in 2016, Pepe was used by an alt-right white supremacist group as a hate symbol. He was portrayed as terrible historical figures. He was also edited into saying horrible things. After this group used him as a hate symbol, the Anti-Definition League added him to the library of discriminatory images. The Anti-Defamation League did acknowledge that not all depictions of Pepe are offensive or used as hate symbols. However, the Anti-Defamation League’s website is one of the first search results when you type Pepe into the Google search bar. The hateful images are no longer prevalent on the internet. But why is he still considered a hate symbol in today's world? I think it is important to acknowledge these parts of Pepe. However, I do not believe that Pepe should be known as a hate symbol.
