What Happened:
On Friday, August 24, 2024, at 8:00 PM UTC+1 (9:00 PM Moscow and Kyiv time), internet entrepreneur and founder and owner of the cross-platform messenger Telegram, Pavel Durov, was detained at Le Bourget Airport in Paris, after arriving from Azerbaijan.
According to various media reports, he is being accused of complicity in drug smuggling, fraud, facilitating terrorism, and distributing child pornography. These same accusations have been previously made against the owner of Telegram (which he elaborated on in an interview with Tucker Carlson on February 17, 2024, later posted on the interviewer's YouTube channel).
Why is this petition important?
Firstly, the accusations are completely unfounded. They are based on Pavel Durov's refusal to cooperate with the authorities of France and other countries by providing personal data of individuals under investigation by intelligence services. This would undoubtedly lead to the violation of the confidentiality, privacy, and anonymity of all users. One such instance, if permitted by the CEO of the service, would pave the way for even more similar cases in the future, potentially not only for crime prevention but also for political repression. Moreover, it shifts responsibility from the real culprits onto the hands of an entirely innocent person.
Secondly, Pavel Durov's potential imprisonment would result in his inability to fulfill his role as the owner, and therefore, he would be replaced by someone else. It is highly likely that in the future, authorities in many countries around the world would gain the ability to control and possess users' confidential information, using it for their own purposes. This would be especially problematic in states with autocratic and dictatorial regimes, where such measures could be used as repression against the opposition or simply those who disagree.
