THREE DAYS LOCKED DOWN. DIGNITY IS NOT OPTIONAL. #FreeAbdus

This past weekend Cheshire Correctional Institution was on lockdown i.e. no showers, no calls, no visits, and no meaningful time outside your cell. Ismail watched his cell get tossed and his personal belongings handled without respect during what he understood to be a quarterly corrections operations check.

What does this accomplish in the name of rehabilitation? How does this promote public safety?

The mental anguish of confinement does not disappear when a checklist is completed. Neither does the harm of being cut off from family, basic hygiene, and human connection.

For Ismail, who maintains his innocence, this compounds the injustice we have been fighting to end. Our campaign demands that evidence of innocence receive meaningful consideration. Procedural barriers should never matter more than a person’s freedom, dignity, and life.

Call Maureen Platt and Patrick Griffin. Urge them to take the necessary steps to vacate Ismail’s conviction, dismiss the charges, and reunite him with his family before he suffers further harm.

He deserves to return to his community and access the physical and mental health care he needs. His family deserves to have him home.
