Last October, Tomas Zaragoza was tased and beaten by officers before being taken from his home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, while celebrating the birth of his 8-day old daughter. ICE trafficked Tomas without due process to the concentration camp in Jena, Louisiana, where the internationally renowned Palestinian activist, Mahmoud Khalil, was held, living in unbearable conditions. The worst thing for Tomas is not getting to be there for his daughter and missing the first year of her life. For Tomas, it's heart-wrenching to watch your daughter through a video screen hold out her arms to be held by you and no matter how bad you want to be there to hold her and pick her up, you can't. No one deserves to be ripped apart from their family like that!
His absence isn’t just the physical removal of a person; it’s the removal of a vital support system that his family critically depends on. Every day apart is a struggle for his wife and their now almost one-year-old daughter. His wife always regarded him as the foundation of their family, a pillar of strength and love. He was the sole caretaker of his father, who is stricken with cancer. His father is on dialysis and desperately wants to see his son again before he passes. Tomas was also helping take care of his 19 nieces and nephews. We’ve been working tirelessly to keep the family afloat during these trying times, refusing to believe that all hope is lost. The ICE concentration camp in Jena has sparked international concern over its deplorable conditions. According to Tomas during a call with his wife, he and his fellow imprisoned folks are treated like animals, they are fed "slop", and that it is almost impossible to receive any medical attention or care. He has witnessed plenty of human beings who are not attended to at all--until they are already on the verge of death. Aside from it being overcrowded, there are officers and military officials going in and out of his quarters which deprives him of his privacy and dignity, along with causing distress because he never knows how they will act.
On a different call with his wife, Tomas relayed that (a) they never turn off the lights; (b) there are ninety-six people in his dorm; (c) they have to share four toilets, just one sink, and six showers--three of which don't even function; (d) they're always late in serving the "slop"; (e) the imprisoned folks never get to go out to the yard for fresh air; (f) there are people with multiple nationalities, speaking multiple language, all thrown together with no way to speak to each other, or the officers; (g) some people have been there for months with no movement, while other move into and then out of the prison rapidly. Additionally, only two phones work well enough for the imprisoned folks to call their families and loved ones. Thus, the lines to use the phone are long. They also have to sign up on lists to use video calls, because there are only two or three communication devices that are currently operational.
We cannot ignore the undeniable impact this is having on families like Tomas's. During video calls there are many tears shed on both sides. No family should have to suffer this unconstitutional separation inflicted by a system said to protect and serve ALL OF US!
Sign this petition to demand Tomas’s immediate release. Reunite him with his baby so he can finally hold her again! Let him return to his father that wants to see him one last time. En Octubre del año 2024, Tomas Zaragoza fue brutalmente golpeado y electrocutado con un taser por oficiales del condado de Tuscaloosa, despues de aver estado celebrando el nacimineto de su primer hija. Tomas fue arrestado y trasladado a una carcel en Jena Louisiana, en donde tambien estava detenido el activista internacionalmente conocido, Mahmoud Khalil. Las condiciones en este lugar son horribles y ninguna persona deveria de ser tratada asi. Lo peor de esta cituacion es que Tomas se perdio de estar con su hija en su primer año de vida. Para Tomas es muy dificil tener que ver a su hija a traves de una pantalla de telefono al solo poder hablar por video llamada. Imaginate lo dificil que es querer cargar y habrasar a tu hija y no poder hacerlo. Nadie merese ser separado de su familia de esa manera!
La ausencia de una persona no solo es fisica; al alejar a una persona de su familia es alejar el sustento unico que su familia tiene. Todos los dias son dificiles no solo para Tomas si no Tambien para su esposa eh hija de ya casi un año de edad. Para su esposa no solo es el sustento economico, es el pilar de su familia el que es fuerte y amoroso. Tomas no solo cuidaba de su hija y esposa, el tambien devia cuidar de su padre el cual fue diagnosticado con cancer. Su padre deve de tener tratamiento de dialisis por su condicion, a él le gustaria ver por ultima ves a su hijo antes de morir. Tomas tiene una familia grande por la cual por el buen corazón que tiene ayudaba a sus 19 sobrinos y sobrinas Tambien en lo que él podia. Emos estado tratando de apoyar lo mas que podemos ala familia de Tomas lo mas possible que emos podido. No estamos dispuestos a darnos por vencidos y tampoco dejar de tener fé. De acuerdo a su esposa, Tomas dice que las autoridades de la prision los tratan como animales, el agua de ahi no es apta para consumirla. Tambien es imposible para los prisioneros obtener asistencia medica. Tomas a tenido que presenciar varias veces a personas que no han sido atendidas medicamente, solo los ayudan hasta que ya es demasiado tarde. Ademas de la carcel estar sobrepopulada, hay oficiales policiales y militares entrando y saliendo de las instalaciones, las cuales los privan de su privacidad y dignidad. Este comportamiento les causa mucho estres y anciedad por no saver la manera en la que los oficiales podrian actuar para con ellos.
En otra de las llamadas que Tomas le a echo a su esposa, él le comento que (a) las luces nunca son apagadas (b) ay mas de noventa y seis personas en un dormitorio las cuales deven de compartir cuatro sanitarios, un solo lavamanos, y seis regaderas de las cuales tres no funcionan. Las comidas siempre son servidas a horarios tardados y las comidas son desagradables, los prisioneros nunca ven la luz del dia y ni respirar aire fresco pues no son sacados al patio. Hay personas de barias nacionalidades hablando multiples idiomas, todas en un mismo lugar sin poder comunicarse de ninguna manera con los oficiales. Algunas personas an estado encarceladas ahi por meses sin tener respuesta de cual seria el procedimiento de su situacion, mientras otros son liberados oh trasladados rapidamente. En adicion a estos problemas solo dos telefonos funcionan. Las filas para llamar a sus familiares son largas, y ademas tienen que hacer una cita para poder llamar a sus familiares por medio de video llamada, por que solo nay dos oh tres dispositivos que son accecibles.
No devemos ignorar el daño que estan pasando no solo los prisioneros si no Tambien los familiares, al igual que sucede con Tomas y su familia. Durante las llamadas ay muchas lagrimas por ambos lados. Ninguna familia deveria sufrir estas separaciones inconstitusionales causadas por el sistema que se supone deveria de resguardar la seguridad de todos NOSOTOS!
