Official governmental documents reveal that the Legislature of the State of Florida -- Claude Kirk (R), Governor -- was presented reports as early as March 16, 1970, that were prepared by the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission regarding the ecological impact of the Cross Florida Barge Canal. Later, U.S. President Richard Nixon (R) halted all further construction of the Cross Florida Barge Canal on January 19, 1971 by Executive Order.
