Every year, since the inception of IB at St. Robert, students have been able to choose their own courses of their own free will. This has a huge impact on their futures since it heavily influences their university applications. This year, St. Robert Guidance has decided to limit the course selection of IB students to the predetermined IB pathways. This is extremely detrimental to students who wish to take certain courses but are unable to due to this change. Additionally, these pathways make no sense at all. The Computer Science Pathway has Higher Level Math, Economics, and History. There is a single science, which is Chemistry, offered at Standard Level. Physics has been a staple for students wishing to pursue computer science in university, yet the school does not offer it in the Computer Science Pathway. Students have expressed widespread disappointment at this change and wish for the ability to choose their courses without the restrictions of the IB Pathways. One of the key elements of the IB Programme is inquiry. However, IB students are limited from inquiring into subjects of their choosing. Instead, they are forced to take courses they have no interest in and are inapplicable to their futures. St. Robert IB students should be able to choose their own courses.
