Free Reda Abdelrahman From Egyptian Jails
The Issue
The International Quranic Center www.ahl-alquran.com founded by Dr. Ahmed Subhy Mansour, calls on you to help pressure the Egyptian government in to releasing the Quranist scholar Reda Abdelrahman. Reda was arrested on August 21, 2020 at his family home in Sharkia, Egypt in front of his mother, wife and daughter.
As of December 2020, the regime is still holding Reda hostage in retaliation for Dr. Mansour's recent writings critical of President Sisi’s human rights violations. Reda had been a prominent writer on www.ahl-alquran.com until his prior arrest in 2015, and he has stopped writing since. Instead, he worked as a teacher in his village’s school and held a second job as a builder up until his latest arrest in 2020 .
Reda is a brilliant Islamic scholar. He has his own blog in Arabic entitled: Justice, Freedom, and Peace. He had published hundreds of articles on the Ahl Al Quran website, but stopped under government pressure. The last article he published, on June 16, 2016, was entitled "The Prophet Mohammed Had Nothing to do With the Falsehood of the Salafists".
President Sisi knows very well that the Quranists are peaceful. In fact, he quoted Dr. Mansour's research article, “Saudis planted the Brotherhood ideology in Egypt," in one of his student papers while attending the United States Army War College in 2005. Daniel Pipes wrote in 2015 in the National Review that: “Indeed, rumors have him [Sisi] affiliated with the radically anti-Islamist Quranist movement, whose leader, Ahmed Subhy Mansour, he cited in his student paper. But Mansour suspects that Sisi is “playing with words” and waits to see if Sisi is serious about reform.”
The lawyer for the International Quranic Center advised us at the beginning of October 2020 to delay the mounting of a campaign calling for Reda's release, hoping that this joke of a case would blow over in time and they would release Reda. Yet, the Egyptian state prosecutors have continued to renew Reda’s arrest every 15 days without either referring him to court or releasing him. In mid-November, we had no choice but to start campaigning to pressure the regime for Reda’s release via our website, social media, and our human rights network.
As a result, our website www.ahl-alquran.com was professionally hacked on November 25, 2020, in all likelihood by the Egyptian regime.
