The situation for Mum and Craig remains incredibly serious, and the last few days have made us even more determined that they cannot be allowed to become just another case file left sitting on a desk.

The British Embassy in Tehran has now moved to remote operation, with UK staff temporarily withdrawn from Iran because of the security situation. For any family with loved ones detained there, it is difficult not to feel that another vital line of support has been pulled further away at exactly the moment it is needed most.

Mum and Craig remain detained and are still on hunger strike. Watching them reach this point has been heartbreaking. They should never have felt that putting their health at risk was the only way to make people listen, or to show how desperate their situation has become.

We have, however, found a way to stand alongside them and hopefully help bring this stage to an end. From Tuesday, five of us will begin a five-day solidarity fast, ending it by eating together on Sunday. This is not about comparing ourselves to what Mum and Craig are enduring—there is no comparison. It is about showing them they are not alone, making sure their protest is not ignored, and creating the space for them to come off hunger strike safely.

Yesterday I met Alistair Burt, the UK’s new Envoy for Complex Consular Detentions. His role is specifically focused on the most difficult cases involving British nationals detained overseas, including cases where there are serious concerns around welfare, due process and human rights. He listened carefully, will look closely at Mum and Craig’s case, and has a role that can help bring greater focus, coordination and pressure across government.

I also have an upcoming meeting with Stephen Doughty, the new Minister for the Middle East. This is an important opportunity to make clear that Mum and Craig’s case needs senior political attention, a credible strategy and urgency—not simply sympathy. His brief includes the region and consular affairs, making him central to the effort to get British nationals safely home.

But meetings and reviews alone will not be enough. We need Andy Burnham and Ed Miliband to take this case on as a personal mission. Mum and Craig are not abstractions; they are loved, missed and suffering, with a family here living every day with fear and uncertainty. We need both men to use their influence, their public platforms and every available channel to push for one outcome: get Mum and Craig home.
