The Issue
INNOCENT BRITISH CITIZENS HELD IN PRISON IN IRAN
We are the family and friends of Lindsay and Craig Foreman - two British nationals who have been arbitrarily detained by the Iranian authorities since January 2025.

Craig has been held in the harsh Evin prison in Tehran since August 2025 and Lindsay was moved there in October 2025 having been held in cramped conditions in Qarchak, the notorious women's prison. Their health is deteriorating. Evin prison is known for human rights violations, inadequate nourishment and lack of clean water, condemned by the UN and Amnesty International as unfit.
On Tuesday 17th February 2026, more than a year after their arrest, they were sentenced to ten years imprisonment for spying by a judge who has been sanctioned by UK, US and EU for human rights abuses and running "show" trials. Lindsay and Craig's sentence came after a three hour court hearing in October during which no real evidence was provided and they were not permitted to present their defence. UN special rapporteurs have called for their release and formally recognised the multiple human rights abuses suffered by them during their incarceration. Lindsay and Craig's only "crime" is their British citizenship. They are innocent. They are humanitarians, lovers of life, and kind-hearted people who do not deserve this ordeal.
When the war started at the end of February, Embassy staff were removed from Tehran and left without telling them. Lindsay and Craig were left without support, locked up in a filthy prison with rats and cockroaches, food in short supply. In May their communication with the outside world was cut off and they were banned from calling their family. They have been left without hope, told by the Ambassador that they should prepare to be there for a long time despite their innocence. In July 2026 Craig was informed his sentence has been increased by two years by a judge without a trial. No defence, no lawyer and no translator were allowed. Through May, June and into July 2026 Lindsay and Craig have been on hunger strike: protesting their innocence; protesting that vitamins, glasses, toiletries and basic necessities are being denied them; protesting that they are no longer allowed to talk with their family; seeing it as their only method to be heard.
The UK government had failed to act decisively. Ministers have described their case as "appalling and totally unjustifiable" and confirmed them to be "innocent tourists". They vowed to pursue this case relentlessly with the Iranian government until their return home but there has been no sign of real action so far. Now with a new Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister in place, we are asking government for pro-active engagement as opposed to the previous Ministers' policy of wait and see.
WE DEMAND ACTION NOW
We are asking Prime Minister, Andy Burnham and the Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband to intercede directly. The special envoy for complex consular affairs, Alistair Burt, needs to be given the power to act and to take tangible action to bring them home. The Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) need to provide far more urgency in supporting them and ensuring their welfare.
The UK government must step up their efforts to end this travesty and bring Lindsay and Craig home to safety and security. Specifically they should now
- Confirm this is Arbitrary Detention
- Offer Lindsay and Craig Foreman diplomatic protection
- Take appropriate legal action such as proceedings at the International Court of Justice
- Take proactive and immediate action to secure their release
- Take responsibility to ensure their welfare, safety and security
This is a priority. It is not just a tragedy, it is a failure of duty.
