The Issue

Kelly Yu has lived in Arizona for more than 20 years. She came here to escape China’s one-child policy while pregnant with her daughter, who is now a U.S. citizen. Over the past two decades, Kelly has built her life here—raising her daughter, working hard, and becoming part of the fabric of Peoria. Today, Kelly’s daughter is a college student who also helps her mom at the family’s restaurant, Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine, a place many in the community know and love.

At a recent routine check-in with immigration, Kelly was suddenly detained. Now she faces deportation. If that happens, her daughter will lose her mother right when she needs her most—balancing college, work, and the uncertainty of her mom’s future. Their family’s stability will be shattered, and a community that depends on Kelly’s presence will suffer. Deporting her won’t make anyone safer. It won’t solve any immigration issue. All it will do is punish a woman who has spent more than half her life here and tear apart the family and community that love her.

That’s why people across the political spectrum are standing with Kelly. Brent Peak, Co-Chair of Northwest Valley Indivisible, and Lisa Everett, Republican District Chair of Legislative District 29, have come together to call for Kelly’s release. This bipartisan support shows that Kelly’s case is not about politics—it’s about compassion, fairness, and keeping families together.

Kelly isn’t a case number. She is a mother, a neighbor, and a community member who belongs here. Her life is here. Her family is here. Arizona is her home.

Time is running out. Kelly could be deported within days. That’s why your signature matters now. Every person who speaks up adds pressure to stop this injustice. Together we can make sure Kelly Yu stays where she belongs—with her daughter, her family, and her community in Arizona.
