On World Press Freedom Day, Julian Assange’s brother, Gabriel Shipton, delivered our 700,000 strong petition to Australian Independent MP, Andrew Wilkie. In Australia, we’ve demonstrated massive popular support for our hero, Julian Assange and the major parties can no longer ignore us.
At the petition delivery, Mr Wilkie pointed out that “in the past, both the PM and the Opposition leader have hidden behind the lame excuse that they can’t intervene in this matter because it was before the courts.”
He said, “Well it’s not before the courts anymore and Mr Assange’s fate now rests purely on a political decision. So Australia’s PM and the man who wants to be the next PM must speak out today."
I’m so proud of all of us for being able to directly support the family of Julian Assange in their effort to get parliamentary support in Australia. This is what John Shipton, Julian Assange's father had to say about the delivery:
“I'm grateful to the 700,000 people who signed the petition to stand with my son, and to Andrew Wilkie and the Friends of Julian Assange parliamentary group for listening to them.."
