My sister-in-law, Eman Elshazly, is a 45-year-old British mother of four who has been detained in Egypt for more than 30 days.
Eman travelled to Egypt to visit and support her unwell mother. On 17 August 2026, Egyptian security forces raided her mother’s home and Eman was taken into detention.
She has since been held in a high-security detention facility. Eman has not been able to speak to her British husband, and the UK consulate has still been unable to carry out a welfare check or obtain consular access to her.
The Egyptian authorities have reportedly alleged that Eman is being held in connection with claims of spreading false information on social media about the Egyptian government. Eman denies the allegations and is not a political activist.
Her family has strong concerns that her detention may be connected to the political activism of her sister, Mona Elshazly, who lives in the UK and has publicly criticised the Egyptian government. Other members of Eman's family have also been detained.
We are asking Andy Burnham and Ed Milliband, to use their public and political influence to urgently raise Eman's case and call for the UK Government to take action to support her, secure consular access and protect her welfare.
Eman is a British citizen, a mother of four , a wife, a daughter and a sister.
She has been separated from her family for more than 30 days. Her loved ones desperately need to know that she is safe.
