Celebrating the Man and His Voice

Today is Byron's 46th birthday. Nineteen of those birthdays have been spent behind prison walls.

This morning, I had the privilege of doing something every mother treasures—I sang "Happy Birthday," and heard his voice filled with laughter. As I listened, I wasn't thinking about case files or court documents. I was thinking about the remarkable man my son has become.

For twenty years, Byron has made a decision every single day. He has chosen growth over bitterness. Faith over despair. Service over selfishness. He has mentored other incarcerated men, pursued education, maintained an exemplary institutional record, and become known as a teacher and encourager to others.

Birthdays naturally make us count years. Today, I find myself asking a different question:

How many more birthdays should a man spend in prison after demonstrating genuine transformation?

Justice should never be afraid to recognize redemption.

Today, I am asking you to celebrate Byron—not simply because he is my son, but because every human life has value and every person deserves to be seen for who they are today, not only for the worst chapter of their past.

If Byron's story has touched your heart, I invite you to continue standing with us by signing and sharing his petition.

Today, we celebrate a life.

Happy 46th Birthday, Byron.  May this be the year that justice finds your name.

"Prison has confined Byron's body, but it has never imprisoned his voice."

A grateful and faithful, Mom

Rev. Jamesina E. Greene
