Freedom Begins Long Before Release

Freedom Begins Long Before Release
When people think about freedom, they often think of the day a prison gate opens. As the mother of an incarcerated son, I dream of that day too. But over the years, I have learned something that has changed my life:
Freedom begins long before release.
Freedom begins the moment we refuse to allow shame to silence us.
Freedom begins when families discover they are not alone.
Freedom begins when we become informed, find our voices, and advocate for justice instead of suffering in silence.
My son, Byron, has spent years mentoring other incarcerated men, pursuing education, and demonstrating growth and leadership despite his circumstances. His body remains behind prison walls, but his character, his faith, and his purpose cannot be imprisoned.
As his mother, I have also experienced my own journey toward freedom. What began as heartbreak has become advocacy. What began as tears has become purpose. Through A Mother's Cry, I have had the privilege of walking alongside countless families who are discovering that hope can exist even while they wait.
Your support of this petition is about more than one man.
It is about believing that justice matters.
It is about believing that people are more than the worst accusation or mistake associated with their lives.
It is about believing that families deserve to be heard.
And it is about believing that hope is never wasted.
Every signature tells our elected officials and decision-makers that someone is paying attention.
Every share expands the conversation.
Every prayer strengthens the journey.
Thank you for standing with Byron. Thank you for standing with our family. Thank you for standing with every family walking this difficult road.
Please continue to share this petition with your friends, family, faith communities, and networks.
Together, we will continue advocating for truth, justice, accountability, and hope.
At A Mother's Cry, we believe freedom begins long before release.
With gratitude,
Rev. Jamesina E. Greene
