Free Azat Miftakhov

Free Azat Miftakhov

Azat Miftakhov, a young mathematician (27 years old) from Moscow State University, who has been detained since February 2019 due to the “broken window of the United Russia office” case. We demand to set him free and stop the prosecution.
The night of 30-31 January 2018 unknown persons broke a window in the Khovrino district office of United Russia (the ruling party), before throwing a flare inside. Azat is accused of being on the look out for the group. Azat now faces 7 years of prison (pursuant to Article 213 Section 2 of the Russian Criminal Code). There are no aggrieved persons and no damage but the window pane. However, Azat Miftakhov has already spent almost 2 years in detention.
Memorial Human Rights Centre considers Azat Miftakhov a political prisoner. Linguist Noam Chomsky, anthropologist David Graeber and other academics (including Société Mathématique de France, American Mathematical Society) demanded to release Azat.
We believe that Azat Miftakhov should not be in prison: he needs to be free and have an opportunity to continue his scientific research.
More details on the Miftakhov case here. Note that in February 2019 the officials beat and tortured Miftakhov using a screwdriver.
