Prevent construction of a new AMC hut in Crawford Notch State Park.

The Appalachian Mountain Club has proposed construction of a new hut in Crawford Notch State Park, a proposal which The New Hampshire State Parks System has met with enthusiasm. The AMC has done many great things over the years. It has helped to mitigate impact of a heavily used forest, sponsored educational programming, raised and donated funding for worthy causes, and built and maintained trails and bridges. However, this new hut will create a massive scar on an otherwise pristine landscape.
Beyond the footprint of the hut, this project will incorporate infrastructure, parking for 50 cars, a new hiking trail, possibly a ski trail, wind turbine, and buried electric lines. The forest access and educational opportunities created will not be broad based as intended: a two night stay could cost a family of four $1100.00* or more! Only a small percentage of forest users choose to pay ** (or can afford) these fees. Camping on Forest Service land is free.
The AMC has provided no research indicating anticipated use, impact, or erosion. It has provided no statistical analysis stating that this is a beneficent project, that this hut is the best possible use of this land for the greatest number of forest users. The initiative for this project could very well be profit driven. Furthermore, it is attempting to build on state land within the confines of a town with no commercial zoning!
It is worth noting that the AMC Highland Center is just up the road and two other AMC huts are within close proximity (read: short hiking distance). The need for a new hut simply doesn't exist. The AMC's plush coffers, coupled with the eagerness of the Parks System, will be difficult to stop. Although a few quiet announcements about this project have been made, not much of an effort has been made to derail construction.
Every voice that opposes this project will need to be heard! Start here, preserve our forests for future generations!
*Paul Cuhna of the AMC suggested the previous figures listed on this petition were inaccurate. An effort has been made to correct this inaccuracy. The Sparkling Cascade hut is proposed to be similar in scale to the Lonesome Lake hut; according to the AMC's reservations site, as of 8/15/2015 the cost of one adult, non-AMC member, full service stay for one weekend night on 8/22/2015 is $156, the cost of one youth (ages 13-18) is $124.
** If the new hut were to have 50 beds, it would service, assuming 100% occupancy, 6,750 +/- hikers during the full service season; a small number relative to the those who recreate in Crawford Notch during the same time period.
